How MAFIAA killed itself and why Goth is undead

When I was about thirteen years of age I discovered music – you know, real music, outside of what you see on television, hear on the radio and pick up from your parents. It was at that age that I discovered metal was pretty cool, transitioned my clothing to black and essentially discovered that music comes in albums that can be either bought for extortionate moneys or downloaded for free (audiogalaxy.com was The Thing back then)

A bit later in life I realised metal was actually rather dull and became more and more goth. It could be argued that metal was the gateway music for me, was just different enough not to be pop, but not exactly high quality (sorry to all metalheads, but most of it is just extremely dull). As I became goth I was trapped because once you’re goth, you can’t actually stop being goth. It’s a very virulent subculture in that sense.

At first you’re a noob goth who wears too many spikes and tends to be different, just like everyone else. Then as a goth grows older they realise all the spikes and makeup are somewhat silly. Even later they realise leather boots and similar don’t quite work out in the summer. Perhaps at some point they might even discover that colours other than black can be worn – revelation! HOWEVER! None of this will prevent a person from being goth. Even outwardly proclaiming yourself not to be goth … will make you even more goth. I don’t pretend to actually understand how or why this works, but simply put – the less goth you think of yourself, the more goth you are.

This brings us back to the MAFIAA topic. Notice how at thirteen I discovered music and albums? This was because back then the MAFIAA already invented The Single, but it was promotional material, it basically said “Look, we made a cool song, we have others” the video served the same purpose. These days my sister is fourteen. She has yet to discover music. The only music she ever listens to is music television (not just MTV) and whatever her friends bluetooth to her phone. Of course her friends, also, haven’t really discovered music and so only singles get passed around.

This is in large part a fuck up by the MAFIAA. At some point they became so obsessed with promotion that nearly half the songs on an album are released as singles. Everything can be bought and downloaded as a single music file – which may or may not magically stop working.

No wonder people aren’t buying albums anymore you stupid gits, it’s because you never talk about albums anymore! You just keep promoting songs.

I don’t know, maybe I’m just growing out of touch with the common teenager, but I used to cherish the idea of a music album. I wanted to see an artist’s full breadth, not just a song here and there. Of course half the album usually sucked, but that’s alright, it gave us insight, it helped us feel the music and the artist’s soul.

Today … today music feels more like a glorified special effects fuckfest. And it’s all the MAFIAA’s fault. It’s people like them that forced Amanda Palmer to abandon her music record so as to be able to actually create music. Surprising fact – she’s even more successful after having abandoned them and sells more of

Erm, Swizec, dearie. The singles have been around for many, many years: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_%28music%29

I do agree that albums are underapreciated these days, though.

Yes they were around for a long time. Probably as far back as the 50’s. But back then they were promotion for the album, now they’re the main product.

THAT’s what’s changed.

A long time ago, and some artists even recently, an album was a single work of art. It had a beginning and an end, a flow, a story. Now it’s a collection of singles.

Well, it’s true what you’re saying, it was all about album until MTV fucked everything up.

Still, I adore singles, not for the ‘main’ song, which appears on the radio, but for B-sides, which are often even better songs, but artist was forced to get them off because of stupid record labels.

Not the main point of your post but … metal is dull? Care to elaborate please? I don’t know what you ware listening when you came to that conclusion but I find metal THE music.
Or to put my words into something more solid: what is dull about Judas Priest’s Painkiller ? :) I find myself banging my head wherever I am when that (or something of that kind) comes cracking out of the speakers.

ps: I’d love to if you’d suggest some great goth bands as I’ve been meaning to check that shit out. Not that I plan on wearing spikes and paint my face white (being a geek it’s already white enough) :)

Not all metal is dull, 1980’s metal is, as a rule, pretty awesome. But compared to modern metal that metal is pretty much just rock. It’s no more “metal” than, say, Nickelback or Marilyn Manson and similar.

Actually all that “we need to be metal” crap is what turned me away from metal. They try so hard to be hardcore that they pack their music with EVERYTHING and there’s so much that it all becomes just a drone and even though the underlying rhytm is quick and fast and full, the overall melody becomes quite mellow and boring. Think of it like two interacting sine waves going in the same direction. Same pulsing effect.

As for good goth music, I don’t really know since it’s all so vastly different and all the stereotypical goth bands never identified themselves as goth, but as rock. And those who identified themselves as goth were mostly posers trying to cash in on a meme.

Of those I’ve listened to personally I’d have to suggest Cruxshadows (nearly synth pop), Bauhaus (can be quite boring if you’re not in the mood), Sisters of Mercy (also, can be boring), Nick Cave, Siouxsie, Voltaire (very awesome and whimsical)

But really, the goth culture is vast and includes everything from industrial to rock and dark cabaret. There isn’t even a common theme anymore I don’t think.

That’s true, modern metal kinda sux more or the less.
But still … there are still some bands from the golden age that rock just as hard as they did.
I’m just wating for Metallica to get their shit together (last album is a step in the right direction).

And please … don’t even mention nickelback and metal (or rock for that matter) on the same page :)
