Student+entrepreneur != hard

Yesterday I gave a guest talk sort of thing at the Jobfair on my faculty. The point was to perform the function of a live demo for my startup incubator and help them get more startups that way.

My personal point was to get some blokes to go “HEY! I wanna to help with that too!”, which of course did not happen because the audience was mostly electronics and hardware people. But nevertheless, it was a lovely chat.

Although, I noticed a very interesting trend. None of them felt very keen on becoming entrepreneurs while still at uni. They thought it was too hard, that next to classes and studying they don’t really have time to do anything else. Hell, I even got an almostpplause for being such an impressive lad that I can do both AND keep a girlfriend.

But seriously, it’s not hard at all. Just take this week’s Tuesday as an example:

On Tuesday I worked for nine hours, five of which were studying/taking a hard maths exam (I count school as work because it’s my “job”). I went to the playhouse and I watched an episode of House. I also helped my girlfriend prepare a presentation for school.

And I still went to bed by midnight.

See, it’s that fucking hard!

Not only have I never passed as many exams as I have now that I’m also an entrepreneur, I’ve also taken up a new sport (boxing), which takes six hours out of every week.

Sure it’s not all fun and games and many people find it difficult to jam 60 to 70 working hours into every week. But if you think being a student and an entrepreneur is hard, you’re trippin’ man. Seriously.

Just get off yer arse and do it. The television and alcohol can take care of themselves.

Ubuntu release party, start:up and weed

Weeds

But mostly the weed.

Guess who I bought weed from last night? … that’s right, the only two niggers in Ljubljana! So few of them and that’s the first industry they get into! xD (it was a bit expensive, but very fine though)

Anyhow, the Karmic Koala was released yesterday and there was a great party in its honor last night at Kiberpipa. It was pretty cool to say the least, lots of geeks all in one place, free beer and PIE! Pie people! I like pie. Oh and the introductory lecture thingy was bloody awesome.

Also yesterday was the day of start:up 100% entrepreneur forum blahblah event thingy. That was an all ’round marvelous event and I learned a lot. My presentation also went ridiculously well and that makes me a bit happy. I spent four hours making that stupid thing, it better work!

Unfortunately though, most of the other presenters didn’t seem like they’ve invested the same kind of attention in their presentations. They were for the most part ridiculously full of text, a bit mundane and essentially very somewhat ‘corporate’. I hate that style of anything.

Startups are supposed to be, in my mind, hip and cool, not strive to being boring and corporate too soon in their lives.

Oh and I have to mention this … organizers … if you call it “lunch of networking”, please for the love of god, provide some free food or something, even just canapes, and keep us all in the same bloody building. The free cookies were marvelous though, omnomnom.

Mini Seedcamp Ljubljana finalists congratz

Today the Mini Seedcamp Ljubljana finalists have been announced and even though I’m unfortunately not amongst them I want to congratulate each and every one of them. You guys rock the business world’s socks off … apparently.

It’s difficult to say why each contestant was chosen, especially because I haven’t taken a long enough look at the list, but it’s quite obvious why my idea wasn’t amongst them. Spelling out why the application hasn’t worked out right now would probably bore you to death so I’ll keep it short – too early.

Yep, I was all giddy and happy about what I was working on and in the process, as has often happened before, failed to notice just at what an early stage it actually was. The main idea behind it, still not implemented, still no user base, nothing. Will definitely have to work on all of these points before I apply again and rest assured, I will apply again.

Except for the whole “You can only apply to one Mini Seedcamp event.” on the application page. Anyone know what exactly this means? Am I screwed until the main Seedcamp in September?

Anyhow, out of the finalists I must say the idea of longurl.net seems best. Nice, simple, big user base and overall excelent for these things. People love simple.

Once more, congratz guys, best of luck to you.
